The Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences has named a 600-gallon aquarium that is the focal point in its lobby the Volkert Aquarium. The naming is in honor of a $100,000 gift from the national infrastructure engineering firm headquartered in Mobile.
Volkert Chief Executive Officer Thomas Hand presented a $150,000 check to USA President Bonner at the naming ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2024. Volkert donated an additional $50,000 to the University's College of Engineering.
鈥淥ur gift to the 小蝌蚪APP, College of Engineering and Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences reflect our support and partnership with President Bonner, the 小蝌蚪APP and the Mobile community,鈥 Hand said. 鈥淚t also reinforces our long-standing commitment to education, engineering and our coastal environment.鈥
Volkert鈥檚 gift will allow the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences to add additional capacity to its analytical facilities and allow researchers to detect and quantify chemicals in the region鈥檚 coastal waters.
鈥淥ur facilities allow us to train the next generation of marine and environmental scientists on this state-of-the-art instrumentation so they have the skills to address the challenges they will inherit,鈥 said Dr. Sean Powers, director of the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences.
