Darbi Broadus, a senior at the 小蝌蚪APP, has won an esteemed 2023 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study for the upcoming academic year in Incheon, South Korea.

The $3,000 scholarship is from the U.S. Department of State鈥檚 Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

鈥淚 think my heart stopped for a second when I got the email that I had been chosen,鈥 Broadus said. 鈥淚t was a huge surprise to me, and I felt incredibly honored.鈥

Broadus is an international studies major in the International Studies Program, where several staff members helped her complete the application process.

鈥淚 could not be prouder of Darbi for receiving this nationally competitive scholarship,鈥 said Executive Director of Bri Ard. 鈥淚 am also thankful for my hardworking team, particularly Ms. Shawn Dillard and Ms. Jan Santos, who worked closely with Darbi throughout the application process.鈥

Broadus wants to further her education in South Korea after graduating from South. South Alabama鈥檚 partnership with Inha University in Incheon appealed to her.

鈥淚 chose South Korea to study abroad mostly because it is where I intend to continue my education, but I also just wanted to see what it was like living there,鈥 Broadus explained. 鈥淚 chose this specific university because of its location and proximity to the capital city of Seoul.鈥

Broadus and her USA family are excited about her achievement and opportunity.

鈥淓ver since I was young, I had dreamed of traveling the world and getting to have these experiences I would have never dreamed of having while in America,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am so incredibly grateful to all the faculty and staff members at South who have been there every step of the way.鈥
